The Gmund Environmental Charter
As the first paper mill Gmund determines with its Environmental Charter a novel ecological standard and clearly comments on the four columns of environmental protection in the paper industry:
Water
The Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund owns the first ozone-based purification plant worldwide. The colored production water is cleaned only by ozone (O3) avoiding any additional aggressive chemicals. As a result the water can be re-used several times. Not only the water consumption has been reduced significantly, also the specific effluent consumption decreased by half in comparison to the conventional fabrication of colored papers
Raw Materials
The use of environmentally friendly, sustainable raw materials as well as the FSC certificate is self-evident for Gmund. As the first “colored paper mill” Gmund converted the whole production, which includes ALL Gmund Collections, into FSC.
Waste
For 20 years Gmund pursues its strict internal waste elimination program. Every piece of waste is separated and will be, wherever possible, recycled. Thanks to this process the amount of waste has been reduced by 82 % within the last 10 years.
Energy
The energy generation is exemplary in Gmund. Over 70 % of the electricity is produced by own waterpower and heat cogeneration from the production itself.
For these environmental standards stands the Gmund ECO certification logo. It is available for Gmund clients for the use on Gmund Paper as a label for an environmentally friendly paper product. Only products with this certificate guarantee the environmental protection within all four areas of the Environmental Charter.

Our company is FSC certified since July 2006 (Nr. GFA - COC - 001370). For the manufacturing of our FSC certified papers we use FSC certified materials and materials from controlled sources. The control of the non FSC certified materials is accomplished according to the FSC standard for controlled wood (FSC-STD-40-005).
In accordance with the standard for controlled wood we thus commit that it is the principle of Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund to exclude raw material from the following sources:
- illegally harvested wood
- wood harvested from forest areas where civil or traditional rights of the population have been violated
- wood harvested from non certified forest areas with high conservation value (so-called High Conservation Value Forests HCVF)
- wood harvested from genetically modified (GM) trees
- wood harvested from forests that have been converted to plantations or for non-forest use
If it turns out that our company uses wood from such sources we will immediately take all necessary action including the stop of purchasing from these sources for all products subject to this guideline.
Our company is committed to take the utmost effort to identify the origin of the wood used for the manufacturing of FSC product groups. Should the identification of origin of several raw materials prove to be impossible, we commit ourselves to replace them with raw materials from known origin.
